The sunset run I needed + a perfect book
What’s helping you move through your days?
The sky darkens too soon now, often as I’m wrapping up my workday and I can’t seem to get upstairs, away from my desk and screens fast enough to squeeze in time outdoors, in the light, before night arrives.
Tonight the window was closing, but I changed quickly and headed outside. 1 mile, 2 miles—I’d take whatever I could get. Only a few minutes in, I felt the day, the worries, the stress, the to-do list slip away. I had other things to think about, like putting one foot in front of the other and noticing how good the cool air felt on my bare arms.
Then, as my feet carried me around the bend and toward the field, I realized I timed it just right after all.
I read this book 3, 4? years ago and fell in love with Lily King’s gorgeous words and storytelling. I should say I fell in love again, because I’d read her earlier book Euphoria, which came out six years before Writers & Lovers, and I was absolutely astonished, stunned, bowled over. Lily King’s way with words is a wonder to behold.
I decided to re-read Writers & Lovers, because I love it that much and also because I knew I’d be inspired as I work on my first book (I shared more about this new adventure in my last newsletter, earlier this week, in case you missed it). Savoring a favorite book, reading it years later having had different life experiences and gained new perspectives in the time since—this is one of the very best things in life.
I can’t recommend this book—all of Lily King’s books—enough. Her short story collection Five Tuesdays is Winter is another one I imagine I’ll pick up again.
Tell me something good about your week. I would love to know what’s helping you move through your days.
Coming soon:
Outdoor running/adventuring guide. I like to call this my guide to actually enjoying being outdoors moving, all winter long—I’m a believer and I want to share how you can also embrace the elements and have FUN while doing it! Yes, the weather this week is downright amazing here in northern Michigan (60s tomorrow, in mid-November!), but winter is around the corner. What you may or may not know about me is that I love running in the winter (I feel most alive, I’m a sweaty-mess runner so the colder weather feels so good to my body) and I have some great tips and ideas to share from my years of training and running/snowshoeing/hiking all winter long. This will be for paid subscribers, so I hope you’ll consider becoming one if this is of interest to you! I’ll also be sharing with paid subscribers special savings on online store items, in case you are interested in any of these Moving Through and Michigan Runner Girl clothing pieces and accessories for holiday gifts (or for yourself).
Thank you for being here. I’ll see you back here soon!
Love,
Heather
